Content: This 5-day summer school will
explore the spirituality of islands and island life along Ireland's western
shores from the early Christian period up until modern times. The Christian
monastic life lived in remote, often spectacularly isolated, hermitages on
Ireland's western coast was central to an early Celtic spirituality which
expressed itself most dramatically through tales of marine pilgrimage and
depictions of life in the wilderness. More recently, visions of island life
have become central to a modern Irish spirituality, through the works of the
Blasket writers, through folklore, art and music of the crofting tradition.
Participants will be introduced to the importance of spirituality on some
of Ireland's most remote coast-lines in early Christian and medieval times up
to the present day. A variety of related subjects will be explored through
stimulating lectures. Field trips will also be a core element to the
school. These will include a trip to the Great Blasket Island and/or a trip to
Skellig Mhichil, weather permitting.
Lecturers will include: Dr.
Pádraig O Fiannachta, Dr Seán O Dúinn, Dr Jonathan
Wooding, Mícheal de Mórdha, Dr Karen Jankulak, Fr. Tomás O
Caoimh.
Dates: The programme will last for five days from
Monday 19th August 11am to Friday August 23rd pm.
Cost: The
school will cost 290 euro. This price is inclusive of lunch and dinner meals
but exclusive of accommodation.
Accommodation: Applicants
will be provided with options and recommendations of accommodation in Dingle
town.
