Féile na Samhna 2004

Music, Song, Poetry, Dance - a taste of last year's Samhain festival held at Díseart


Díseart celebrates the ancient festival of Samhain and invites everyone, to join in their celebrations of this ancient festival as they bring together an eclectic mix of indigenous arts, culture and traditions from the Dingle peninsula at the most south-westerly point of Ireland, a region famous for its breathtaking scenery and rich and vibrant Gaeltacht traditions. It will invite its participants to experience and enjoy drama, storytelling, music, dance, poetry, lectures, art exhibitions, liturgies and walks and of course the hospitality of the Dingle peninsula as family folklore is brought to life in a new generation celebrating the thriving age-old traditions of the Dingle Peninsula.

Díseart Institute of Education and Celtic Culture, Dingle, County Kerry run a varied and interesting cultural programme, which is punctuated throughout the year by the celebration of the four ancient Celtic Festivals; Imbolg (Lá 'le Bríde), Bealtaine, Lúnasa and Samhain.

This year's Samhain festival, Féile na Samhna 2004 will follow The Pilgrim's Way to Santiago de Compostela, the 1,000-year-old Spanish pilgrim route.

As the last break before the Christmas holidays, this October weekend is traditionally seen as the end of the official tourist season in the Dingle Peninsula resulting in large numbers of visitors from around Ireland, as well as from Europe and the USA. Last year, Díseart were delighted to welcome many of these visitors as well as local people from the area to a varied and highly entertaining number of events over the course of the weekend.

On the opening evening of the festival Díseart were delighted to host the launch of Clabhsúr Iris na hOidreachta 11, 1988 - 2002. A group of approximately 30 people enjoyed listening to special guest Donal Mac an tSíghigh as he entertained them with stories of local interest which are featured in the book. This was followed by the official opening of Féíle na Samhna by Díseart chairman Prof Pádraig Ó Fiannachta who shared with the gathered audience his memories of Samhain traditions. Details of the schools art competition for Féíle na Samhna 2003 were also announced. With food and wine provided by Díseart, a relaxed and enjoyable evening was enjoyed by all.

Seen by many as one of the highlights of the weekend, Díseart welcomed over 35 children and their parents for an afternoon of artistic expression, fun and games. Many disappointed arrivals had to be turned away due to maximum numbers having long been reached. The afternoon began with storytelling, which was provided in both English and Irish in order to accommodate the many nationalities that were present on the day. The children were then supplied with paper, paints, glitter, brushes and eventually blank plaster masks and were invited to design and create their own masks for Halloween. With the help of their parents, the Díseart Artist in Resident and several of the Díseart staff an imaginative array of masks were completed. This was followed by a selection of traditional Halloween games and culminated in a parade through the Díseart gardens and up to the large bonfire, where everyone was joined by Professor Pádraig Ó Fiannachta who invited all to join him in a Celtic Samhain liturgy. Reaction to this event has been extremely positive, with parents praising the organisation of the day and looking forward to further similar events that can be enjoyed by the entire family.

Domhnach/Sunday 27th Deireadh Fómhair/October

Ceolchoirm sa Díseart/Traditional Music Concert featuring local musicians & dancers

Taking place in the magnificent setting of the Díseart chapel, home to an unmatched collection of breathtaking stained glass windows designed by Harry Clarke, the concert brought together a mix of traditional music, song and dance. An audience of approximately 50 people heard a variety of traditional music, both instrumental and vocal and enjoyed the spectacular sean-nós dancing of renowned dancer and choreographer, Caimin Collins. Highlights of the concert included a contemporary dance piece presented by ANNÓ - Amharclann na n-Óg Chorca Dhuibhne. During the concert, special guest Páidi Ó Sé, announced details of Féile na Samhna 2003 - Fáilte Abhaile. He outlined to the audience the plan to welcome home all those who might have had a connection with area to join the people of the Dingle Peninsula as they celebrate through various arts including music, art, literature, dance and crafts, their Gaelic heritage.
